Kawartha Lakes
Kawartha Lakes is a rural area located northeast of the Greater Toronto Area and directly west of Peterborough. The region encompasses several communities, such as Fenelon Falls, and a chain of connected rivers, lakes and channels, including the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Visitors to Kawartha Lakes are treated to endless outdoor activities and water pursuits like fishing, houseboating and canoeing, as well as a wonderful local culinary and cultural scene.
The region is also known for its many hiking trails, including spots around Eels Creek and the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail.
Where is Kawartha Lakes?
Kawartha Lakes lies between Lake Simcoe to the west and the city of Peterborough to the east. It’s roughly a two-hour drive northeast of the Greater Toronto Area and four hours west of Ottawa.
The various lakes and towns that make up Kawartha Lakes are best explored by car or motorcycle, although bus service to the region is available through GO Transit.

Explore a canoe museum
Located in the city of Peterborough, the Canadian Canoe Museum holds the world’s largest collection of canoes, kayaks and other paddled watercraft—more than 600 boats in total.
Visit a charming community
Fenelon Falls is a historic town with a beautiful waterfall, family restaurants, art galleries and Garnet Graham Park overlooking Cameron Lake.
Hike the Trans Canada Trail
With over 600 kilometres of Kawartha Lakes hiking trails, there’s plenty of terrain for every explorer. Popular routes include The Ganaraska Trail and Kawartha Trans Canada Trail.

Pack your camping gear and head to Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Its family-friendly provincial campground is complete with fishing spots, a sandy beach, boat launch and other outdoor options.

Fishing opportunities abound in Sturgeon Lake and Pigeon Lake, both known for their active populations of walleye, muskie and bass. Guided fishing charters are available in season.
