Flato Markham Theatre is located within the Markham Civic Centre at 171 Town Centre Blvd and is surrounded by green space and parkland. During winter the reflecting pond is transformed into a large outdoor public skating rink. Bookings are essential due to the popularity of this beloved (free) local past-time. For more outdoor activity, head down the road to Unionville and enjoy a relaxing walk around Toogood Pond. From humble beginnings with local and school-based productions in 1985, the theatre has grown into a premier performing arts venue with strong connections to its community. To the east over Warden Avenue is a collection of sit-down restaurants to whet your appetite. King Edward’s Arms is a local go-to for good food and a great atmosphere in a traditional English Pub. Just down the road, the community of Unionville also has a vibrant arts scene. Fans of Canada’s famous ‘Group of Seven’ artists will appreciate the extensive collection at Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery, located on Main Street in Unionville. The theme extends across the road at the Salem-Eckhardt House, home of Mrs. Kathleen Gormely McKay, a supporter and dear friend of Mr. Varley. Like the Flato Markham Theatre, the Art Gallery is operated by the City of Markham and actively supports the Markham Arts community.
